Outline

When using Permuter, downloading the following software is convenient for translation work.

Word macro - find1
This macro is more useful than the Find and Replace function of MS Word (hereafter called Word). The word where the cursor is placed is automatically entered as a search character (similar to the search of Maruo Editor). After translating by using Permuter, all the hidden source sentences can be deleted.

Excel macro - sort1
Dictionary (glossary) text file is opened by Excel and sorted in descending order of the number of source phrase characters.

Excel macro - from2text
All texts on the source Excel sheet are read and written in another text file. All source texts on the Excel sheet are replaced to the translated target texts based on the TM generated by the Permuter translation.

PowerPoint macro - from2text
All texts in the source PowerPoint slide are read and written in another text file. All source texts on the PowerPoint slide are replaced to the translated target texts based on the TM generated by the Permuter translation.

Executable file - sort_descend
Lines of a given text file are sorted in descending order of source phrase characters of each line.

Executable file - RemoveExtraSymbols
Unneccesary newlines are deleted, that come in when saving a PDF document as a text file.


Guide to the Word macro - find1.dotm

Download find1.dotm by clicking the following file name:

    find1.dotm

Save it in the Word STARTUP folder as shown below after downloading:

    C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

After that, when you start Word, the StartFind icon [startfind] is displayed on the Quick Access Toolbar.

Clicking this icon opens the Find and Replace dialog.

  Find and Replace

Enter the search string in the Find what: box (the word at the cursor position is entered and can be changed). Click the Find button to search.
If you enter a replacement word in the Replace with box and click the Replace One button, only one of the corresponding word is replaced. If you click the Replace All button, all applicable words are replaced.

When you check the Hidden box and click the Replace All button, all hidden characters will be deleted.


If the security warning message as shown below is displayed at starting the above macro, click the Enable Content button.

Guide to the Excel macro - sort1.xlsm

Download sort1.xlsm by clicking the following file name:

  sort1.xlsm

Double click sort1.xlsm and click Macros in the Code group on the Developer tab.

Then, the following macro names are displayed in the Macro name box:

In the Macro name box, click the macro that you want to run after you:

1. Leave Sheet1 blank:

List_file_names ⇒ All file names in the selected folder are listed in Sheet1.

2. Copy the dictionary file and paste it on Sheet1 you want to process by one of macros:

Ascend_words_with_macron ⇒ Japanese words ended with macron are placed higher than those without macron in the English to Japanese dictionary.

Decend_words_with_macron ⇒ Japanese words ended with macron are placed lower than those without macron in the English to Japanese dictionary.

Delete_duplicate_row ⇒ When there are duplicate tow rows of which leftmost and the next column cells contents are same, one of rows is deleted.

Search_duplicate_rows ⇒ Duplicate row are searched in the opened sheet.

Sort_rows_in_descending_order ⇒ Rows are sorted in descending order of the number of source phrase characters of the dictionary (glossary) in the opened sheet.


Guide to the Excel macro - from2text.xlsm

I. Extract text from an Excel sheet

  1. To translate the sentences on the Excel sheet, first download the Excel macro from2text.xlsm.
  2. Click Macro on the Developer tab to display from2text in the macro name box.
  3. Click Run to display the From or To Text File dialog as shown below:

  5. Copy the source sheet you want to translate and paste it on any sheet (Sheet1, Sheet2 etc.) of from2text.xlsm.
  6. By default, "from2test.txt" is displayed in the Enter or browse a text file path to read from or write into box for the text file name to be saved.
  7. Change this filename as necessary or click Browse and specify the full path of the text file to be saved.
  8. When you click the Retrieve texts button, all the texts are read from the Excel sheet and saved in the specified text file.

II. Replace the source text of Excel sheet to the translated target text

  1. After translating the text file by using Permuter, you will replace the source sentences in the Excel sheet into the translated sentences based on the generated TM.
  2. Before doing so, however, you first rearrange all the lines of the source-translation sentence pairs of the TM into descending order of the number of source sentence characters.
  3. For rearranging, download the executable file sort_descend.exe and double click it, then the following dialog will be displayed:

  5. Enter the full path to the TM text file to sort or click the Browse button and specify the TM file.
  6. Click the Sort button, then the sorted TM is saved in the original TM file name suffixed with "_sorted.txt".
  7. Double-click from2text.xlsm and paste the source sentences to be replaced into a translated sentences on one of sheets.
  8. Select the Text => Excel option button in the From or To Text File dialog and enter the full path to the TM file which was sorted in descending order of the number of the source sentence characters into the Enter or browse a text file path to read from or write into box or click the Browse button and select the TM file name and click the Retrieve texts button.
  9. Then the source sentences of the Excel sheet will be replaced to the translated sentences based on the specified TM file.

Guide to the PowerPoint macro - from2text.pptm

 I. Extract text from a PowerPoint slide

  1. To translate PowerPoint slide sentences, first download the PowerPoint macro from2text.pptm and double click it.
  2. Click Macro on the Developer tab to display from2text in the macro name box. Then click Run to display the From or To Text File dialog as shown below:

  4. Copy the source slide you want to translate and paste it on the slide of from2text.pptm.
  5. By default, "from2test.txt" is displayed in the Enter or browse a text file path to read from or write into box for the text file name to be saved.
  6. Change this filename as necessary or click Browse and specify the full path to the text file to be saved.
  7. When you click the Retrieve texts button, all the texts are read from the PowerPoint slide and saved in the specified text file.

 II. Replace the source PowerPoint slide texts to the translated target texts

  1. After translating the text file by using Permuter, you will replace the source sentences in the PowerPoint slide into the translated sentences based on the generated TM. Before doing so, however, you first rearrange all the lines of the source-translation sentence pairs of the TM into descending order of the number of source sentence characters. For rearranging, download the executable file sort_descend.exe and double click it and sort the TM text file as done for the above mentioned Excel text replacement.
  2. Double-click from2text.pptm and paste the source sentenes to be replaced into a translated sentenes on the slide.
  3. Select the Text => PowerPoint option button in the From or To Text File dialog and enter the full path to the TM file which was rearranged in descending order of the number of characters of the source sentence into the Enter or browse a text file path to read from or write into box or click the Browse button and select the TM file name and click the Retrieve texts button, then the source sentences of the PowerPoint slide will be replaced to the translated sentences based on the specified TM file.

Guide to the Executable file - sort_descend.exe

Download sort_descend.exe by clicking the following file name:

Double click sort_descend.exe, then the following dialog will be displayed.

Enter the full path to a text file in the Enter or browse a file name to sort box to sort it in descending order of the number of source phrase characters, or click the Browse button to select the text file name and click the [Sort] button, then the sorted text file is saved as "source_file_name_sorted.txt".


Guide to the Executable file - RemoveExtraSymbols.exe

Download RemoveExtraSymbols.exe by clicking the following file name:

Double click RemoveExtraSymbols.exe to display the following dialog:

Enter a full text file path in the Enter or browse the text file name to remove extra new lines box to remove extra line breaks, or click the Browse button to select the text file name and press the Remove extra new lines button, then the text file from which the extra newlines have been removed is saved as "original_file_name_lines_removed.txt".
